Throughout history, periods of upheaval moments have often given birth to genuine progress and change. Also Pride Month commemorates such time, when riots and protests created awareness of deep-rooted problems and energized people to take action to create substantial change. The roots of Pride are in righteous anger, riot and uprising against police brutality. Led by Black trans* women and QTPOC on the forefronts, the Stonewall Riots propelled queer* movements from assimilationist tactics towards unapologetic Pride. These riots worked. Pride is a reminder of what’s been done, and a push to keep working toward full equality. Creating more awareness around the injustices of today has become more important than ever.
Pride is also deeply rooted in community. We must stand together, fight together and for each other.
“No pride for some of us without liberation for all of us“
Marsha P. Johnson
