A Shared Struggle: The emergence of the LGBTIQ+ rights movement in Europe and America – Prof. Casey Hayes

Moderation: Andreas Brunner / QWien

Dr. Casey J. Hayes, a 2021 Fulbright-Botstiber Scholar in Austrian American Studies, will discuss the origins of the early LGBTQ rights movement within Europe and the United States. The presentation will dissect the paradigm that civil rights for the emerging communities was not an American export; rather the result of socio-economic conditions which created a “tolerance of necessity” throughout Central Europe during the 1920’s. Dr. Hayes points to popular music, performers, and events of the period to make his case that while Stonewall was a critical turning point, it was not the beginning of an active resistance to legal constraints upon the homosexual and non-binary communities.

The event takes place virtually. You can watch the stream on the US Embassy’s YouTube channel.
